Scherer, Sylvia Acrylic_gildin g EYE OF T

1st Place-Paintings In ancient cultures the peacock’s elaborate iridescent train of extravagant plumage symbolized the eyes of the stars in a cosmos also dotted by the sun and the moon. Gilding this painting was complicated by the use of diverse metal leaves to create a harmonious balance with the delicate acrylic background and the gold frame, highlighted by ethereal floating feathers throughout. Eye of the Stars Acrylic, gilded with gold, silver and copper leaf 48 x 24 $3,500 Sylvia Scherer

Walsh, William-Short-eared Owl

Walsh, William-Short-eared Owl

3rd Place-Paintings This is my favorite owl & is only here in winter. I have seen as many as six owls together at once. It is most active at twilight but sometimes comes out to hunt before the sun sets and can be very playful, interacting with other short-eared owls as well as any daytime hawks that might still be out hunting. Its call is more of a “bark”, almost like a small dog, and it loves to call as it swoops at other owls or hawks. Short-eared Owl Acrylic 19 x 15.75 $430 William Walsh

In painting “The Red Thread” my goal was to combine the vitality and motion of the tiny red-breasted nuthatches with the stillness and solidity of an antique Russian collar of bells, while creating contrasting visual rhythms between the birds and the bells. “Heron IV” is part of my “Fleeting Glimpses ~ Sightings” series which focuses on capturing the rare and precious sightings of the creatures and environments surrounding us which we often miss noticing and take for granted. I was particularly attracted to the dramatic wind-blown pose of the heron which inspired my use of dramatic colors. Heron IV Acrylic layers on 2” raised panel 36 x 24 $1,900 Robyn Ryan

Walsh, William-Covey of Quail

Walsh, William-Covey of Quail

I was lucky to come across this small covey of quail in a local park. Northern Bobwhite Quail are becoming harder to find as their numbers drop. I was able to get relatively close to these birds, perhaps why their numbers have been dropping. Some raised their crown feathers, a sign they were wary of me, and one cautiously moved away, but soon they all continued to forage for small fruits that had dropped from a tree nearby. Walsh, William-Tree Sparrows

Walsh, William-Tree Sparrows

Every winter, several species of birds migrate down from the north to spend the winter here. This sparrow nests at the edge of the Boreal Forest where it meets the Tundra and is always a joy to see here during the cold winter months. It has a two toned bill and a dark spot in the center of its breast. Like most sparrows, it’s shy and often hides in tall grasses and bushes near open fields. Mulvena, Danny-Buzzard Roost

On a walk in the woods on our property I came onto this buzzard up in the trees. Each time I got a bit too close to him he'd take off and land in a tree a bit further up the trail. This hop-scotch went on for quite awhile. I kept wondering when he'd tire of our little game, he kept wondering if I was gonna fall down and die. Oh well. Liberace Lina Cuckoo with Milkweed oil

Liberace Lina Cuckoo with Milkweed oil

This yellow-billed cuckoo (a rescue that did not make it) was one of the most beautiful I’d ever seen. I painted it along with a milkweed pod, opening up to bring new life. I’m sometimes asked why I paint dead birds. I guess I’m practical enough to not let an opportunity of painting such a gorgeous creature pass me by. It is my attempt to honor and capture the beauty that is sometimes all too fleeting. Yellow Billed Cuckoo with Milkweed Oil on panel 18 x 22 $2,000 Lina Liberace

Padilla, Chito-Bird of Paradise

Padilla, Chito-Bird of Paradise

This vibrant collage captures a stylized image of the exotic birds-of-paradise. The members of this family are known for the plumage of the males, the very long elaborate feathers extending from the beak, wings, tail or head. All these species have generally black plumage with varying amounts of green and blue iridescence. The female plumage is typically drab to blend in with their habitat, unlike the bright attractive colors found on the males. Bird of Paradise Acrylic 24 x 18 Chito Padilla

Hughes Gabriela All But One Mixed Media.

Hughes Gabriela All But One Mixed Media.

Beauty starts at the most foundational level. For a bird, it is in its feather. The texture, colors, and detailed brush strokes pronounce the uniqueness and complexity of a single element that goes into the creation of such a regal creature. There is so much majesty in watching a bird soar through the sky, but I wanted to explore the beauty and simplicity of a single feather, as this humble object is the foundation of of majesty All But One Acrylic and mixed media 31 x 25 $750 Gabriela Hughes
