Summer Pastels
Two Day Workshop with Lori Goll
July 16th - 17th

Day 1
This workshop is suited for all levels of artists...from beginners to experienced artists wanting to learn about the magical medium of soft pastels. No matter your style...realistic, impressionistic, abstract, etc, pastels provide a vibrant, portable, and versatile medium from which you can make beautiful paintings. Lori will discuss and demonstrate different brands of soft pastels, various substrates, underpainting techniques, framing and storage options, studio safety, plein air setups, etc.
The subject will be Seascapes. There will be plenty of reference photos available, but the students are welcome to bring their own seascape photo reference to create a small painting.
Day 2
Students will delve deeper into different wet and dry underpainting choices, including charcoal value, complimentary color, alcohol or gamsol-brushed, and watercolor underpaintings. Lori will discuss the importance (and methods) of planning your compositions using thumbnail value and notan sketches, as well as methods of transferring your subject matter onto your working surface. You'll work from life (still life setups) in the morning.
In the afternoon, the subject matter will be Animals and the depiction of hair and fur. Again, there will be some animal reference photos but you are welcome and encouraged to bring your own.
