Contrast and Harmony

Choyce, Cathy-Red White BlueBest in Show! It has been more than a year of upheaval, unrest, divided beliefs and many changes for not only our country, but the world as well. This piece of art demanded to be born. Camaraderie, tranquility, softness, acceptance – all present among these gentle souls. These horses exemplify what people should strive for despite their differences,. Red, White and Blue, all united. My hope is that in the future. Red, White and Blue Pastel 33 x 25 $8,695 Cathy Choyce | Mulvena, Danny-Good FridaySecond Place! While I was doing some drawings and taking a few pictures around this farm one of the hand came up to see what I was doing. We got to talking a bit and I asked if there any lambs around. " Not this time of year" he replied. “Easter’s just around the corner." Good Friday Watercolor 15 x 19 $400 Danny Mulvena | Gardiner, Maribe Chandler-How High is the MountainThird Place! The challenge was exciting & freeing! This was the 1st of 3 versions of the same design: each horse was depicted as Shape, Line, or Modeled. I love using rich colors & creating textures with my watercolors & subdued tones to create harmony while variations in the design elements present the contrasts of form & scale. They are begun with rough shapes and a pattern of light and dark and are then developed with layers of opaque paint and glazes. Under layers peeking through providing interest and visual texture. Use of the palette knife in places also provides a randomness that provokes creativity and often takes me on a path I had not planned. We would all do well to find our childhood copy of P. D. Eastman’s book about Ted and Fred, and reread it. This is a playful painting; the styles and proportions are rather mixed up. Wallace, Ann-FarewellFarewell Pastel 22 x 18 $600 Ann Wallace | Suiter, Cathy-Dairy Barn #2Dairy Barn #2 and #3 were both from photos taken the same day but under different lighting. One is in early afternoon sun, the other in deep shadow. In #2, you can almost feel the coolness of the shady barn and my wonder what you would find through that open doorway. In #3, the focus is mainly the vine covered smoke house. There is a pleasing ellipse created by the back light on the surrounding foliage. Dairy Barn 2 Oil 14 x 18.5 $435 Cathy Suiter | Shervin, Cheri-American HerefordThe harmonious beauty of cows is a calming sight. Most of their behaviors: eating, sleeping, moving from 1 pasture to another are done in unison. When you come upon a herd, they harmoniously stare as well. They are curious about humans & hope you have grain to share. The painting represents a familiar sight one sees on the farm & suggests that cows have an intelligence & emotional range that often is overlooked in these gentle giants. Sharpe, Susan-Let's Go Down the RoadFor most of us who live in Fauquier and Loudoun Counties the presence of power lines is considered an intrusion. We are happy enough about some other evidence of human presence – fences, barns, silos, antique mills. These we consider part of the charm...I’ve come to admire the power of power lines, the graceful swoop of the wires, even the arms and gadgets... Let’s Go Down to the Road Oil 21 x 25 $500 Susan Sharpe | Ryan, Robyn-Echoes-1-webThis was a break-through piece as it challenged me to move past my normal representational style of depicting horses to introduce variations of both Form & Scale. I chose to use the same pose for the horse across the variations. I love using rich colors & creating textures with my watercolors & the subdued tones and equine subject create the harmony while the variations in the design elements present the contrasts of form & scale. In the studio, I worked on creating the deep shadows of autumn & pushed the yellows where the sun hit the leaves on the forest floor. I also loved the red of the dogwood tree against the green of the other trees making it stand out. I carried the colors of the leaves throughout the stream to bring harmony to the painting. Myles, Steve-Wildflower MeadowMy current journey is to find a balance between detailed realism & bold impressionism. I don’t want my work to look like a photograph, nor do I want it to look like something I might have done in the third grade. To accurately render an object with an optimum number of brush strokes is my goal in landscape, still life & portraiture. The leaves of the birch trees were unusually bright with a range of colors against the dark pines of the hillsides. In the studio I pushed the range of warm colors and bright yellows to develop a striking contrast with the dark background. Autumn Colors Oil on canvas 21 x 17 $595 Stuart Hindle |
Kirk, Brian-EmanatingX16I have always been intrigued with the forces of nature. I consider myself a naturalist and a curious spectator and in printmaking, a subtle manipulator of the natural interaction of water and steel. My intention is for you to participate, as a naturalist, examining the prints for visual imagery, subtle variations in the rich palette of ochre’s, oranges and browns and share in the wonderment of this natural phenomena, rust. I find the shapes of his trees and his compositions endlessly compelling. Hopkins, Laura-October SunshineI became a little more aware than usual of my use of contrast and harmony in this painting as I created it for this show. I noted that I used some sky color to lighten the field in the distance and some of the earthly red of the trees in the foreground. A smaller portion of the tree color warms the sky. This painting from memory and imagination offers a quiet, yet cheerful moment. October Sunshine Oil on linen panel 13.5 x 15 $350 Laura Hopkins | Baker, Michelle-One Winter DayWhen my husband & I relocated to Virginia, the beauty of the area excited me as a photographer & journalist. Last year after a 30-year hiatus from painting, I found the beauty of Virginia to be my inspiration, yet again. Sitting high on a hill on Hopewell Road in Fauquier County, this tree caused me to stop for a photo of the sunlight bouncing off the snow. Hopkins, Laura-Stop Here A WhileThis painting, from imagination & memory, leaves the time of day open to the viewer. Each viewer has a unique experience with a painting entirely separate from my experience painting it.
