Farmlands in rural areas are a beautiful part of the region. Driving back roads can oft times provide the most spectacular of Piedmont scenery. I rarely go hiking in the rain but this day had low hanging clouds over the hills. It was a rare treat to capture. I took the reference photo at Sky Meadows State Park. My daily walks at twilight all year round are a strong influence on my creative process. This painting from imagination and memory draws on those fleeting images. This scene near Sky Meadow State Park is so typical of the Piedmont. The rolling hills, the Blue Ridge Mountains in the background and the small lake on the farm are everything one might expect in this beautiful part of Virginia. When I think of the landscape in the Piedmont, I think of the little ponds and watering holes for all the local wildlife we have in the area. While I was trying topping the lily pond , my eyes kept being drawn to the artist in front of me. The sun was lighting upper blue smock and straw hat. When I got back to my studio I started this painting using my memory and some photos as references. I love how it turned out! Jones Point Park highlights a popular area for dog walking, exercise and neighborhood get togethers. I loved the way the wildflowers had repopulated the areas that were formerly a manicured lawn. Sky Meadows contains cow pastures that work their way up and down the mountain, and it feels like you are at the top of the world as you view them. I wanted to capture that feeling. It is said that when a cardinal appears, an angel is near.
