 Raindrops falling on the millrace during a sun shower at Ohio's Clifton Mill created an irresistible pattern for me. I played around with the image to bolden the trees' and sky's reflections. The violet patch is my favorite.  Between the water and the sunlight is a figure suspended in the vagaries of a summer day.  Spring in the Sierras brings an abundance of water flowing over the mountains and into the Merced river. I spent many days hiking and camping and loving this part of the world.  This pictorial sculptural vista creates my rendition of the prehistoric under water creatures. Much of eastern Virginia was a shallow sea in the Miocene Epoch, 23-5 million years ago.  The Dolly Sods wilderness area in West Virginia is the southernmost sub-arctic tundra in North America. At an elevation of 4,000 feet it is characterized by stunted trees and granite landscapes. Subject to fierce storms the rain quickly fills the cavities in the stone, as you can see in this image.  Deer Island, Canada, near the Bay of Fundy, has some of the highest tides in the world. The difference between high and low tide here is 23 feet, and the water moves rapidly. A fun and challenging place to paint!  In this piece, I depict the reflective and translucent nature of natural water surfaces using an accretion technique unique to encaustics. No one else is around since the humans have all returned to their boats, or to their homes in The Settlement.  Waterside Retreat is oil on panel and based on a stop at the water's edge to do some painting. I am inspired by rivers and lakes of the region especially during autumn when the fall colors are at their peak. The colorful fall foliage is reflected in the water -- creating specks of color in a few areas. The background is comprised of the distant trees on the far side of the river.
