It is a study of season’s contrasts: the starkness of the white roses alongside the warmth of the red apples, and the white figurine of the bather in period of the pandemic. Merkin, Karen-PatternsI have always been fascinated with the use of color, & the subtlety of light & shadow on those colors. I am intrigued by the reflections and patterns of light on glass in windows and doorways—particularly to see the distortion of objects reflected back to the eye. To paint everyday objects with attention to fine detail, I often set up still lifes and use photos to accurately capture the light. Storey, Maureen-Through the Looking GlassThrough the Looking Glass – a Mirror with Tulips in a poplar frame. I am drawn to creating my glass artwork with various flowers in mind. Tulips are one of my favorite “subjects” because they herald springtime; they arrive in a plethora of colors; and they are pleasingly plump yet delicate flowers. Through the Looking Glass Mirror w/stained glass in Poplar wood frame 25” diameter $750 Maureen Storey | Macy, Suzan-TulipsTulips Oil 20 x 23 $450 Suzan Macy | BruniniNoreen_Defeated_watercolor on gessoed paperDefeated is an experimental work -- gesso has been applied to the Arches watercolor paper. The gesso breaks up the watercolor in unexpected ways and creates a nice textural background. Defeated Watercolor on gessoed cold press 24 x 18 $350 Noreen Brunini |
Macy, Suzan-Afternoon DelightAfternoon Delight Oil on canvas 12 x 16 $425 Suzan Macy | Wine, Linda-Roses and Cherry BlossomsDead animals, books, pipes, fruit, flowers—still life has always been on the lowest rung of the hierarchy of genres. (History, portrait, genre, landscape, animal and then still life!) The distinction is between “rendering visible the universal essence of things” and “mechanical copying.” My goal was to paint loosely, with one stroke. Perhaps someday I’ll be an impressionist! Treyz, Fritz-LeftoversBirds have a special space in our lives and known mostly for their pleasant song and vivid colors. There’s something deeply appealing about birds that endear them to us. Leftovers Oil on wooden panel 9 x 12 $500 Fritz Treyz | Sharpe, Susan-Three OrangesOne problem in painting still life is the relationship between the foregrounded subject and the background. In this painting I simplified the light and shadow on the fruit and mug into geometric shapes that I then echoed in the background. Three Oranges Oil 10 x 13 $150 Susan Sharpe | DeFluri, Peter-Oranges in a BowlOranges in a Bowl Oil on canvas 12 x 16 $250 Peter DeFluri |
BruniniNoreen_CoffeeTableBookTravel2020_watercolorCoffee Table Book Travel In A Time of Covid was painted during the Covid lockdown. The shock of the lockdown was beginning to wear off & being at home 24/7 was safe but getting boring. One fine morning, I carried my Ice Tea & a Coffee Table book outside to the patio to leaf through the lovely photos. I had used the book as a tray and when I put it down in the sunshine, I thought there's a nice composition! Coffee Table Book Travel in the Time of COVID Watercolor 23 x 27 $600 Noreen Brunini | Sharpe, Susan-DaffodilsOne problem in painting still life is the relationship between the foregrounded subject and the background. I have been making experiments in bringing them together through the use of echoing shapes. The corona of the daffodils form triangles that I have reflected in the vase and background, with other geometric shapes. Daffodils Oil 13 x 10 $125 Susan Sharpe | Treyz, Fritz-Two Pears_editedThe “Two Pears” a Post-Impressionist style painting that helped pave the way for the advent of Cubism and abstract paintings. Two Pears Oil on wooden panel 8 x 10 $575 Fritz Treyz |
While sitting on the deck near dusk, I snapped a photo last month. After seeing the photo, a friend said there is your still life. So here is a peek into my life. (Bottle logo was changed.) I typically do a very light background wash to block out my areas and go back in with a thicker application of color. The angle and the glassware made this still life more difficult than some. Reid, Anne-Break TimeBreak Time Pastel 17 x 17 $350 Anne Reid | Ramirez_Dora_Daisies in Korean Green Celadon Teapot_PhotographyThis is part of a project I’ve had in my mind for a long time. I have always loved the color and elegant shape of this celadon teapot and paired it with simple white daisies. The lighting and black background were used to highlight the beauty of this Korean teapot. Since this image was created during the height of the pandemic in the summer of 2020, it is included in the Isolation series. Daisies in Korean Green Celadon Teapot Photography 18 x 22 $350 Dora Ramirez | Ramirez_Dora_Blue Hydrangea_PhotographyBlue Hydrangea is part of my Isolation collection created during the height of the pandemic in the summer of 2020. Since we chose to stay home, I looked around for images I could make in place. In this case, I went to our garden and picked a bloom from our hydrangea bush. After I captured the image, I experimented with a variety of my digital darkroom tools to realize my artistic vision emphasizing color and texture.
