Best in Show The last moments of silence when the nature is starting to wake up and go about its daily business. The finish is a combination of acrylic and wax and therefore not suitable for outdoor display. Honorable Mention A sunny day brought me to Oatlands Historic House and Gardens. The Loudoun Sketch Club was holding our annual member exhibit and I had volunteered to paint on site. Late October is a colorful time in Virginia with its full spectrum of color. The day was very gray with a little misty rain, but with a little imagination I was able to see many soft beautiful colors before me as I painted in Plein Air. End Of The Day On The Farm Oil 9x12 $175 Kathy Bleau	It was a magical moment when I first viewed these wonderful elephants as they roamed, grazed and socialized as a family and herd with Kilimanjaro in the midst. I just could not believe this scene and that I was there in Amboseli National Park, Kenya. How wonderful to see this verdant landscape and amazing wildlife. I am so thankful for this opportunity. This painting is one of a series of paintings of monkeys that I have done. It is of a group of Japanese Macaques. I was fascinated by their ability to adapt to the harsh environment and I wanted to explore this with my brush and paints. The challenge in this painting was creating a sense of both depth and reflection: to see into the florist's shop while also seeing the sunlit building across the street reflected back. Saw this heron at Brookside Gardens in Huntington Beach SC. I was able to get very close without the bird moviing. I was struck by the beautiful colors in its feathers. I was working to build up layers of color that would shine through to the finish. Some areas of the painting are clearly defined, while others have edges that melt into the background, to direct the viewer to the two flowers in the front of the bouquet. The blues in the background are opposite the orangey-yellows of the flowers, and the purples are opposite the lemon yellows. The most vibrant color on these roses was the shadow at the center of the rose. In order to enhance and balance that vibrant color, I toned down the rest of the colors to a muted gray. Nature In Blue And Green is based on a lake shrouded in fog. Painted with limited palette to emphasize the blues and greens of the lake and surrounding trees. The distant trees were more muted than the foreground trees -- where the reflections of the trees in the water are visible. A variety of blues and greens were used to create depth and interest in the painting. I wanted to capture a very cold sky using blues, yellow, and a touch of orange. Yet, use warmer colors for sunlit areas of the snow using texture and light interaction to create depth.
